Janna Harrison yearned for the beaches of Hawaii so when Agnieszka Gorska, an art therapist with The Denver Hospice, visited her home, she brought sand in a box and encouraged Janna to make an underwater scene.
“It was so thoughtful and so needed by me,” said Janna. “Now when I long for Hawaii, I pull out my tub of sand and play.”
That was just one of the many sessions Agnieszka had with Janna who said art therapy helped her cope with her illness.
“I truly believe I would be languishing and not a very happy person if it wasn’t for art therapy,” said Janna, who was a lifelong artist of various mediums. “I had to give up jewelry making which was my passion due to my disabilities and it was very hard for me. But Aga has been so helpful in showing me other mediums.”
Janna, an admitted perfectionist, at first was intimidated by drawing and painting.
“But I decided I needed to let go of the artistic aspects of it and embrace the therapeutic side of it,” said Janna. “After I accomplished that, it all started flowing and I am now quite proud of my work.”
“It has been very, very good for my soul. This gave me that creative outlet I was seeking,” said Janna. “Even on my worst days, I look forward to these visits. It’s been so beautiful to see the transformation in my Art Journal that Aga gave me.”
