In 2003 I was about 30 pounds overweight. Just 2 years earlier, I had been successful at losing those same 30 pounds. Then I got pregnant with my son. The day I gave birth to him, I weighed 212 pounds. The heaviest I’d ever been. I’d gained 60 pounds during pregnancy. For the next year or so I probably maintained a weight in the 170’s to 180’s.
At the end of 2006, I’d had enough. These last 30 pounds had to go (for a 3rd time). I joined Weight Watchers and reached my goal weight of 125 in August 2007. But I didn’t really learn what I needed to during that journey and by November 2009, I was dealing with being 30 pounds overweight. Again.
November 2009, I made a commitment. It was different this time though. I reignited my love for running. I made some goals. I ran my first 5k and did it much faster than I thought I would! This time, I’ve made fitness a part of my life. I make time for it. And trust me, with being a law student, my plate is full! In December 2009, I signed up for a sprint triathlon – then learned how to swim and got on a bicycle for the first time in 20 years. I am proud to say I finished! I am a triathlete!
I’ve lost 25 pounds as of August 4, 2010. It’s been a slow journey, but I appreciate it because I’m learning how to have a healthier lifestyle. I keep setting goals for myself, that just last year I would have thought impossible. I’m running my first half marathon at the end of August and have signed up for another half marathon in October!
The other day when I was looking at new running shoes (I’ve run 252 miles so far in 2010!), my 6 year old son told me he wanted to start running too! We try to be an active family, and I love that my love of running has made an impression on him. We have a mommy-son “date” to go get him a pair of running shoes and then I’m going to take him to the high school track and run with him! It feels so good to shape his life in such a positive way!
The charity that inspires me is American Cancer Society, Relay for Life. On September 12, 2010, I’m holding a fundraiser (Treading for a Cure) where I will be on a treadmill for 9 hours to raise money for Relay for Life! If I meet my fund raising goal of $1000, I will dye my hair purple for when I run the half marathon in October!
